Now that he wants the progressive vote he is in favor of marriage equality. That seems awfully convenient. He didn't donate money to Specter or some "moderate" Republican. He donated money to SANTORUM. SANTORUM. That kind of political opportunism disgusts me. He has a lot to do to make up for his past actions to make me think his running as a D is anything other than more opportunism.
this guy is a capital R Republican. Why are quote unquote progressives supporting him??
Values, people!!
has anyone bothered to ask him what he thinks about the rights of workers to collectively bargain, how we should pay for public services and whether or not healthcare (including reproductive healthcare) is a right?
Kevin Acklin isn't just a Republican. He's THAT kind of Republican. That means he's probably evil. If he is elected, the wealthy will have unfiltered access to the mayor's office and public contracts will go to Mr. Acklin's friends and contributors. Plus, he's a white guy, so he'll probably give jobs to other white guys and none to minorities. Who does this guy think he is, Luke Ravenstahl?
I hear he goes to church, too, so that a HUGE problem. He'll overturn Roe v. Wade, roll back integrated busing and encourage the evil corporations to employe children in the mills. Those Republicans just don't care about anybody.
So Acklin is pro-life. That's a shame, I suppose, but not exactly a big deal until he tries to ban abortion within the city limits, or until he's able to appoint a new justice to the Supreme Court. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for either of those to happen
Of course, Luke is pro-life, too. Does that make him a capital R Republican? A small d democrat?
Luke does not support gay marriage. Or at least he didn't, as of the 2007 election, when he went white as a sheet at the thought of having to discuss the issue in the WQED debate. This issue may have some play at the city level, but not a lot. Still, Acklin has him beat by a long shot.
Luke did not come out in support of the county's anti-discrimination ordinance. Acklin testified in favor of it in January. He spoke in favor of it again yesterday. That's another big "quote unquote" progressive difference.
Acklin left the Republican Party and says he's not going back. Funny that so many people on the left think no one should be a Republican, but then as soon as someone stands up and leaves the party, he's subjected to doubt, scorn, criticism, and dissections of his wife's blog.
With intolerance like that, we may as well be Republicans too.
The mayor has nothing to do with abortion, blah, blah, blah...
There's an up tick in anti abortion violence. Ravenstahl and other anti choicers on City Council voted against Pgh's bubble zone legislation. A mayor can veto legislation like this. A mayor can choose a police commissioner who can decide where police resources will go.
Dots? What dots? No dots to connect here (hands covering eyes).
So the uptick in pro-abortion violence is the fault of legilators who did not support or pass legislation to protect pro abortion citizens? The people who are perpitrating the violence don't make a decision to pursue that course?
Mayors are administrators. They do not legislate. They are rarely confronted with issues of sweeping constitutional importance. If your deicision on who will lead any city is based more on the candidate's position on abortion and less on matters of fiscal policy, then you're a damn fool.
I have known Kevin for 12 years, and he firmly stands behind his belief in equality. The fact that he beliefs in equal rights for non-traditional couples is absolutely not new information, its just information you just found out about him. He has always been moderate and independent in his beliefs. The fact that he is a registered Independent as opposed to a Republican shouldn't surprise or excite anyone--many politicians change parties...because parties change over the years. Kevin has a strong moral and ethical compass.
