There is a big fancy indoors General Assembly of Occupy Pittsburgh being held tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 7 PM at the United Steelworkers Union Building.
We should be back to blogging regularly and largely on normal topics after that.
There is a monster agenda for the big fancy GA, including: a policy related to the receipt of some donations, a political statement, and a policy on how and when Occupy Pittsburgh will commend or stand with outside groups. All that, and it's going to be hard to avoid the late-breaking political story concerning the true origin of the portable toilets. Having watched a thoroughgoing variety of Pittsburgh City Council meetings, we can tell this assembly is destined to be grueling, contentious and consequential.

I get tons of emails from all kinds of local political and community groups--why is this the first that I'm reading about this assembly? Seems like a pretty insular organization, all things considered.

I need to follow them?! I hesitate to say this, but that sounds pretty elitist and/or immature. Almost like it's some invitation-only secret tree house club. A better approach might be for the organizers to reach out to the broader public, spread the word and generate support.

ReplyDeleteFurthermore, anybody who participates and is discovered to be an "organizer" for another organization, is trussed up, tied to a horse and dragged around camp 100 times while being pelted with rotten vegetables before they are welcomed back into the group.
So a little patience is in order. They're not being elitist, they're just not focused on collecting e-mail addresses to send out e-blasts. This is not your father's Oldsmobile. If "following" on social media sounds elitist, blame social media for using that kind of terminology and swing by the Info tent.
A better approach might be for the organizers to reach out to the broader public, spread the word and generate support.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty much what a twitter account does. Of course, back in my day we had to walk uphill for six miles before we could tweet.
It's like I tell my parents: never trust anyone over 30 who doesn't have an active Twitter account and 4G connectivity. But I wonder, if you tweet a revolution and no one comes, is it still a revolution?
