The only thing Dowd forgot to mention is that Pat Ford himself said the same exact thing -- the same words, in fact -- before receiving the hush money.
The reactions from Team Ravenstahl have yet to even gloss upon the sign, the hush money, or the development czar.
It's all been, "Dowd's being negative" and, "Dowd voted in favor of buying out the contracts of some employees while on the School Board".
Wouldn't it have been great if City Council was given the opportunity to vote on whether or not to pay off Pat Ford? That didn't happen. It was all the Mayor and the Mayor's own URA.
Do you suppose anybody in the media will press the Mayor to actually address the substance of what Dowd -- and just about everybody -- is saying?
The media could press if they want - and I hope they do - but it's quixotic, isn't it? We know exactly what the response will be.
Dowd is right: the Mayor legally bound himself to not talk about it. That's some kind of scam to pull. In a way, that's almost worse than the hush money itself.
A complete and utter lack of - and disregard for - accountability and leadership will be the foundation of Luke Ravenstahl's legacy. And the products of that foundation will be suffered by the residents of the city of Pittsburgh for decades to come.
This event needed better stagecraft. To maximize impact, NEVER stand three feet from moving traffic (a few feet from a bus stop), and ALWAYS make the subject of your press conference the focal point (re: the speaker should be between the media and the subject).
Indeed, this whole campaign needed a better message. Mentioning the billboard 8 days before the election smells of desperation. If I were running the Dowd campaign, I would have made sure he asked the who-knew-what-and-when question when he announced his candidacy and at every event and every interview until the question was answered. It's his ONLY play to win, so ask the damn question - repeatedly and directly until the mayor answers. Who the hell is running this campaign?
Biggest disappointmet since the Star Wars prequels.
Once again instead directly addressing the issue at hand the Ravenstahl campaign has responded with a very weak apples and oranges comparison - only reinforcing the public perception that Pat Ford was telling the truth all along.
After watching that I have no doubt that I will vote for Dowd on the 19th.
When a mayor is corrupt at such a young age, there is no hope for the future. Luke had his chance and failed. For the good of Pittsburgh, we need someone like Dowd in the mayors office.
No. 14 in the Criminal Complaint agaisnt Blagojevich, I thought was quite interesting. Sounds very familiar also...imagine one securing a war chest of campaign money before ethics legislation was due to take effect. Hmmm..makes one wonder why Lukey voted down the legislation until he built a war chest, and then we can bring it back up again. You wouldn't want it to appear that you had an agenda....duh....
to comment on the sign would just be a clear sign of admitting to the illegal part of the entire deal. press coverage....are you kidding. there has been enough there to get the kid indicted and it hasn't happened yet so i guess it never will. Dowd, i think you should bring back the "Lie Like Luke" buttons.
Actually watched the video now. I think Dowd has found his method. Start by teaching, and ease into the anger. By the end, he is at full steam. He should make that into a commercial (although seven minutes is too long for so many reasons - viewer interest, what his campaign budget can bear, etc).

That's the most animated we've seen Dowd, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteNaturally the mayor's camp responded to Dowd's event as more mud-slinging.
Darn fact-based mud. That's the worst kind.

ReplyDeleteNice work Dr. Dowd.

Not talking is a big part of not leading.
ReplyDeleteGo Dowd go! Luke is an embarrassment. And what's with the bodyguards. Even Senators don't have that kind of entourage.
ReplyDelete"This is not a sign of corruption, it's clear."
ReplyDeleteluke is like tom murphy it's his way or no way,,,,

No, a week before the election, it's about time to start calling the Mayor out. I hope he does one a day.
Wow, such in-depth analysis from the Hoagie. He didn't have a ghost writer for that post. But he did have poms-poms.

ReplyDeleteDowd could have done one a day and started it back in February when he announced his candidacy.
ReplyDeleteHell, he could have announced his candidacy in January and done one a day since then. Maybe he should have.
Either way, I'm with Ed: I like the anger/full steam side of Dowd. It's Dr. Dowd at the beginning and Mr. Pat at the end.
When the facts show the truth and there is no defense - All you hear is a small voice in the back of the room saying "go luke"
