The top 5 on each ballot advance to November. The only candidates to win both nominations were Williams, Ingnelzi, Evashavek and Klein. They are assured wins in November. Walko, although he was the second highest vote getter on the Dem side, didn't come in the top 5 on the Republican side. He will still be on the ballot in November, but a win is stacked against him, because the others who gained both nominations tonight have the D and R totals added together in November and Walko only will be on the Dem side. He most likely will win the fifth seat in November though because of the Democratic voter registration edge in the county. Peck and Bicket are also going to be on the general election ballot in November, having received only the Republican nominations tonight, but their chances of a victory in November are slimmer than Walko's, because mathematically there are much fewer registered Republicans in Allegheny County.
In a nutshell, in November both the D and R vote totals are added together to determine the winners, with the top 5 vote receivers going to the bench. The four candidates that won both nominations tonight are assured wins in November. The fifth seat is a tossup, but the edge goes to Walko because he will be listed as a D and there is a great Democratic voter registration edge in the county. It won't be easy for Peck or Becket to get enough Dem votes to pull their lever to overcome the number of votes Walko will receive being listed as a Dem and getting the straight party ticket voters.
CORRECTION---I made an error. Williams DID NOT receive both nominations ... only the Dem. The only candidates assured a victory in November are Ignelzi, Evashavek and Klein. The other two seats will be up for grabs between the others on the ballot: Williams and Walko on the D side and Peck and Becket on the R side. In other words, the two highest vote receivers between Williams, Walko, Peck and Becket will advance to the bench. Williams and Walko will have the edge because of the Democratic voter registration edge. It will be difficult for either Peck or Becket to overcome that edge and the straight party voters in November.

ReplyDeleteDon't forget to add the Dem and Republican totals to determine the winner of the judicial races.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure that's how it's done? I thought it was separate?

ReplyDeleteHey Anonymous - Learn your quasi-government authorities. ALCOSAN is not the PWSA. Walko is on the PWSA board.
ReplyDeleteCheck the books, they saved millions of dollars in the bond deal. Not as many millions as hoped...but still millions more then they had.
