2. Speaking of that blog, it now has an okay post online with an interesting comment thread. I feel like there is a point somewhere to that discussion, but I'm sure almost nobody knows what it is yet. (Matt H Exposed)
3. Apparently the Kaplan Plan for state oversight is the only one worth reporting on, by virtue of the fact that it appears likely to be the only one voted upon. I wonder what would happen procedurally if the Council just insisted upon using the Pittsburgh plan (the plan briefly known as the Peduto Plan) as its framework, stubbornly. I think it would be amusing and instructive to hold up this Pittsbugh Plan for awhile against old man whathisface's plan. (Trib, Jeremy Boren)
"Commuters being tapped..." -- I don't know about that stylistically in terms of a headline, but yes! Bring it on. We like this, Pittsburgh. Commuter tax now. (P-G, Rich Lord)
*-UPDATE: Mayor Luke holds firm, and draws flak from a state senator from McCandless who wants the free lunch for her constituents to continue forever.
"If he thinks taxes are the first option, he's delusional, in this economy," said state Sen. Jane Orie, R-McCandless. "He needs to live within his means. (P-G, Rich Lord)
Pittsburgh's "means" presently consist of bankruptcy, dilapidation and ruination. Stop oppressing us and chip in to our region's future.
4. Beth Hanis shows you how to negotiate. (P-G, Diana Nelson Jones)
5. For those of you who may have already visited Alpark Terrace: apologies if the foliage and perhaps some of the atmosphere disappointed. At the time of my visit around a month ago, the grounds were indeed "well manicured" and "Bambi-like" and all that. However, some reports indicate that elements of maintenance has slipped -- grass growing four inches and higher generally, and the such. Aside from that however things remain as they are. (Pittsburgh Comet)
6. Just in case you're hiding under a rock. (The Busman's Holiday)
7. PittGirl is back.
I should go away, but I've learned something since November. I want to write. It's so simple. I'm taking a risk that my identity will be revealed, and I've prepared myself for that day my mask is ripped away. I have the unemployment papers filled out and everything. (Pittsburgh Magazine . com)
That doesn't mean it's okay to snoop and gossip. If you start getting investigatory, 97% of the bloggers in this town will give you an involuntary colonoscopy with a space telescope. Yarone Zober is also a big fan, so you know, consider that.
*-8. Wade Lipscomb, a barber shop owner from Homewood, was appointed by Gov. Ed Rendell to serve on the PA regulatory board for barbers and barbarism.
Wade’s barbershop has insistently invested back into our communities by participating in programs such as Take a Health Professional to the People Day, The Fight Against Cancer Initiative, blood pressure awareness screenings (sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University School of Nursing), and H.A.I.R. (healthy advocates in reach and research). (Councilman Burgess release)
Great stuff -- though hopefully the Rev got even more out of the deal!
Why wont PITTGIRL go away?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I got tired of her blog after just a couple of visits. Figures that Pittsburgh Magazine would latch on to her for their inoffensive "cool" factor. Next thing you know she'll be the masked woman twirling a whisk at Chris Fennimore's elbow.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few commuters on the Parkway who could use a good tapping.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, I believe Luke did speak of getting some cash from commuters during the campaign. Hopefully that wasn't just a campaign gimmick.
I'm glad to hear Pittgirl is back. Her posts were fun to read. We all need some lightheartedness in our day.
ReplyDeleteHow fucking dare anyone out there make fun of PittGirl after all she has been through.!
ReplyDeleteShe lost her aunt, she went through a divorce. She had two fuckin kids.
Her husband turned out to be a user, a cheater, and now she's going through a custody battle. All you people care about is….. readers and making money off of her.
SHE’S A HUMAN! What you don’t realize is that PittGirl is making you all this money and all you do is write a bunch of crap about her.
She hasn’t performed on stage in years. Her song is called “give me more” for a reason because all you people want is MORE! MORE-MORE, MORE: MORE!
LEAVE HER ALONE! You are lucky she even performed for you BASTARDS!
LEAVE PITTGIRL ALONE!…..Please.
Perez Hilton talked about professionalism and said if PITTGIRL was a professional she would’ve pulled it off no matter what.
Speaking of professionalism, when is it professional to publicly bash someone who is going through a hard time.
Leave PittGirl Alone Please…. !
Leave PittGirl alone!…right now!….I mean it.!
Anyone that has a problem with her you deal with me, because she is not well right now.
LEAVE HER ALONE!
Personally I love reading Pitt Girl. I was really sad when her blog disappeared. I am glad that she's back!! I kicked a pigeon in her honor as soon as I heard the news.
ReplyDeleteAs one of PittGirl's loyal minions and someone who is no doubt much smarter than you, I can assure you that you just didn't get it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, just kidding, but that's kind of what you sound like. So some of us think PittGirl is funny and enjoyable to read, so what? I don't find eff my life funny, but some people do. So what? I don't see why you are threatened by people enjoying PittGirl or why you feel it necessary to criticize her. Just. Don't. Read her.
I was devastated when PittGirl killed her blog. She's so funny, and obviously loves the city so much. It was eerie how often she echoed something I was thinking on her blog. Glad to see her back. She's been missed.
ReplyDeleteuh steve = best comment ever.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who were unaware (and I gather that was a lot of you), Steve's comment was in relation to the Cult Classic video Britney Fan Crying".
ReplyDeleteStyle points override just about anything.
I recognize that PittGirl's return is the dominant news, but I want to ensure I understand your references to "free lunch" and 'oppression' -- just kidding, right?

BBI Should be notified. Boilermakers Local 154 are slumlords...Park 'was' paradise. Part of bigger plan to discredit residents...sleazy campaign to win public support.
Other issues are being manipulated to cast residents in poor light.
Under proper management and with change of maintance supervisor (Joe Fontana) park would bloom again. Joe's Brother, State Sen. Wayne Fontana should step up and urge Boilermakers Local 154 to remove Joe as Resident Manager/Mayor.
Enough already!

What the heck does it say about monk and me that we have time to post to the comet on a holiday weekend? Nice to be at home in the burgh on a holiday. Daughter, who shares name with daughter of monk, volunteered at a cemetary this morning for the holiday. Wants to go back again tomorrow. When in the city for this holiday the cemetary is the place to be. Beautiful ceremony scheduled at Calvary in Greenfield and husband takes son and other males from family every year we are in town.
ReplyDeleteFind that when I post immediately after monk I begin to sound like him as I type and this is funny to me.
Well, Deegazette...it means we have more time than money.
ReplyDeleteManaged to enclose a side of a porch for my dad. Began roof repairs at the "bunker" (trailer)...Had some new skins put on car and Megan came by to share some pictures. She wants me to join something called 'face book'...
Don't think that 'face book' is wise idea... someone watching 'America's Most Wanted' may recognize my photo...
Nice to see someone as young as your daughter recognizing Vets. Very nice...
monk
Holy, holy crap, MONK. I know just what you mean about that Face Book stuff. I DO NOT even get my picture taken if I can help it. Went to a 90th b'day party today and used my old stand-by line..."sorry I am in witness protection plan and can't have my photo taken under any circumstances..." you would be surprised at how many people have no sense of humor. They go into a panic and move away from me quickly. Husband's relatives. Mine are ALL about humor.
ReplyDeleteHope all have taken a moment to reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day. (Thanks Degazette Family)
ReplyDeleteAs a Navy Veteran It only takes me a moment to remember those lost while I served between 1974 and 1979...peacetime casualties…
I do remember the USS Cole DDG 67 attack and how it still affects me. (I served on DDG 5)
Flying POW MIA Flag this week at my bunker at Alpark Terrace.
And, I will play Johnny Cash’s rendition of The Ballad of Ira Hayes…some may think inappropriate:
BALLAD OF IRA HAYES
Celebrated through the land
He was wined and speeched and honored; Everybody shook his hand
But he was just a Pima Indian
No water, no home, no chance
At home nobody cared what Ira'd done
And when did the Indians dance
CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Then Ira started drinkin' hard;
Jail was often his home
They'd let him raise the flag and lower it
like you'd throw a dog a bone!
He died drunk early one mornin'
Alone in the land he fought to save
Two inches of water in a lonely ditch
Was a grave for Ira Hayes
CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Yeah, call him drunken Ira Hayes
But his land is just as dry
And his ghost is lyin' thirsty
In the ditch where Ira died

Clarification Of Previous Post - by monk
ReplyDeleteIra Hayes, was immortalized in Iwo Jima Photo. After battle he was wined and dined,…thinking President…
Photo opportunities.
The only photo that ever mattered to Ira was never taken to my knowledge, not until song was written about him…he knew, but never saw it coming…
On my first ship, USS Puget Sound (AD 38) we had a Captain that cared, Charles Horne the III. Made Ships Photographer take pictures of all Divisions in our everyday attire. ‘Steaming Hats…’
Such dedication to crew: motivated.
Ship was recognized by Secretary Of The Navy Middendorff. Engine Room crew had picture taken with Secretary of Navy.
“like you’d throw a dog a bone” (Lyrics Ballad of Ira Hayes)
Picture of crew in everyday attire still hangs on wall, couldn’t tell you nor do I care where picture of us and Middendorff hangs…
Just a clarification….
